About This Place

Swan Oyster Depot is a beloved seafood restaurant and market nestled in the heart of San Francisco at 1517 Polk Street. Celebrated for its remarkably fresh seafood and an unpretentious, welcoming vibe, this iconic spot has captivated locals and visitors alike—including the late Anthony Bourdain, who famously declared it his favorite dining destination in the city.

The cuisine here is an exquisite celebration of the sea’s finest offerings. Whether you’re indulging in their silky smoked salmon that practically melts on your tongue, or savoring the rich, comforting warmth of their Boston clam chowder, every dish bursts with freshness and authenticity. For sashimi lovers, the Sicilian sashimi and the heavenly scallop sashimi offer an elegant, buttery texture that glides effortlessly across the palate, while the uni sea urchin presents a creamy, oceanic depth that seafood aficionados dream about.

The fresh fish display is a testament to the quality and care Swan Oyster Depot invests in sourcing its catch daily. The combination seafood salad, crowned with delicate crab and shrimp, is a vibrant symphony of briny, crisp flavors. For those in the mood for hearty indulgence, the half cracked crab and lobster arrive bursting with the pure taste of the coast. Each bite of the shrimp cocktail or the savory octopus salad delivers layers of texture, flavor, and that unmistakable freshness you can only get at a place as dedicated to quality as Swan Oyster Depot.

The dining atmosphere perfectly complements the stellar fare. The cozy, no-frills space buzzes with history and community spirit. It’s a place where seating at the classic oyster bar invites casual conversation, and where the staff’s warm attentiveness instantly makes you feel at home—like you’re enveloped in a sea-salt breeze of genuine California hospitality. Although it’s cash only, this small quirk only adds to the authentic, old-world charm that gives this spot its character.

Customers frequently praise the outstanding attentiveness of the team, even during busy times when lines spill out the door. As Francesca Gamberini describes, “the staff immediately took care of any issues with incredible kindness and professionalism,” a sentiment echoed by many who experience the smooth, friendly service that pairs brilliantly with the fresh, delicious seafood. Alex Friend’s enthusiasm for the scallop ceviche—“almost like butter melting in your mouth”—perfectly encapsulates the quality Swan Oyster Depot delivers on every plate.

Whether you visit for a leisurely breakfast of oysters and smoked salmon like Ina Alcazar, or a casual weekday lunch like Taylor G, who appreciates the rich history and good vibes that infuse the space, Swan Oyster Depot promises more than a meal. It offers a sensory journey through some of the finest seafood San Francisco has to offer, served with a side of genuine warmth and tradition that lingers long after your last bite.

In sum, Swan Oyster Depot isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a cherished San Francisco institution that faithfully delivers fresh, exquisite seafood paired with a timeless, welcoming atmosphere—a must-visit for anyone craving an authentic taste of the coast.

There’s a reason this spot is Anthony Bourdain’s favorite spot in SF. It’s pretty straightforward good seafood spot that serves fresh catch! It can get a little pricey but the coziness of the place and the attentiveness of the staff makes it worthwhile. I specifically liked the sashimi platter and the oysters they have are flavorful, briney and fresh — we had it for breakfast and didn’t have any tummy issues! Note though they serve Boston style clam chowder so it’s runnier than the typical chowder you find in SF

I just picked up my order for Christmas dinner and the service was absolutely fantastic. At first, my order was incorrect, but despite the huge crowd and the long line outside, the staff immediately took care of it and fixed everything right away with incredible kindness and professionalism. The team was amazing, super attentive, and always smiling—even with a never-ending line outside the restaurant. Now I truly understand why there’s always such a crowd. I will definitely be coming back and I highly recommend this place to everyone. Truly the best!

Tony told me to come, and I'm glad I did. The food is divine. So fresh, so full of flavour. The service is kind, welcoming and professional. Good beer on tap. The scallop ceviche was ridiculous - almost like butter melting in your mouth. I will definitely go back one day.

Came in right when they opened on a weekday. Played it safer with half the smoked salmon and a cup of chowder since I was having it for breakfast. So yummy!! Incredibly kind and chill staff. You’re coming here for great food and even better vibes. Chill at the bar; good music. The place just feels so rich with community and history. Cash only! Would go back and would recommend.

CASH ONLY In this economy, if they are taking cash only, you’re going for the vibes Free bread Napkin bill Wrong math But given the tables + turnover, it’s worth a visit just to say you did. When I want to feel like a tourist again, I’d give it a visit. The staff are so chill that if you forget your cash, they let you go grab it by the nearest ATM. Buttery oysters were from WA Clam chowder is less creamy than you might expect

Scallop sashimi with olive oil, capers and red onion. Divine. I didn't eat the capers but liked the flavor they imparted. We had a large mixed sashimi prepared the same way with blue fin, yellow tail, scallop, halibut ... superb. 20 seats at a counter. Amazing experience and the service was great.

What an old school gem of a seafood joint! Tony was right, this is a special place and worth your time. Cash only, long line, but incredible service, phenomenal seafood, great vibes and good company. Go out of your way to stop here. It had been on my list for a decade and I had to travel 3,000 miles to get here. Well worth it.

Stepping into Swan Oyster Depot is like stepping back in time to a place that has perfected the art of fresh seafood. This is a no-frills, counter-seating-only institution, and its charm is in its authenticity and, of course, its incredible food. The menu is a dream for any seafood lover. We ordered the combination seafood salad (often called the Sicilian Sashimi), and it was a stunning plate of fresh-off-the-boat tuna, salmon, and white fish, perfectly accented with olive oil, capers, and a squeeze of lemon. The smoked salmon was equally amazing—buttery, delicate, and served with fantastic sourdough bread. The guys behind the counter are true professionals, shucking oysters and preparing plates with incredible speed and skill. The atmosphere is loud, busy, and full of happy customers. It's more than a meal; it's a true San Francisco experience. Essential Tips: • CASH ONLY! The sign in the window isn't joking. • Arrive early (even before they open) to get a spot in line. • Be prepared to stand, but know that the reward is one of the best seafood meals you'll ever have.
